Drain Cleaning in Milwaukee
A slow sink is a sink problem. A slow sink, a gurgling toilet and water at the floor drain on the same day is a main line problem, and in an older Milwaukee house that line is often clay.

Start by working out which drain it is
One fixture draining slowly points at that fixture’s trap or branch: hair in a tub, grease in a kitchen line. Several fixtures at once, especially on the lowest floor, point further down, at the main stack or the lateral that leaves the house. The basement floor drain is the tell. If water comes up there when the washer empties, the blockage is downstream of everything else, and plunging the sink upstairs will not touch it.
Snaking, jetting and the camera
Cabling
A drain cable, or snake, cuts through a blockage and is the usual first step on a branch line or a main line clog. It reopens the pipe. It does not tell you why the pipe closed.
Hydro-jetting
High-pressure water scours grease and root growth off the pipe wall. It does more than a cable on a line that keeps closing, and it is also more than an old, fragile pipe should take without someone looking first.
Camera inspection
A camera run down the line shows roots at the joints, offsets, cracks, sags where water sits, and bellies in the pipe. On a pre-war lateral it is the difference between paying for cleaning every year and knowing the line needs repair. Ask for the recording.
Why Milwaukee laterals clog the way they do
Many older laterals in the city are vitrified clay in short sections with a joint every few feet. Tree roots find those joints, especially under the boulevard trees along older streets, and a root mass can close a line slowly over a few years. Cast iron inside the house rusts and scales from the inside, so the pipe gets narrower even with no roots at all. The lateral from the house to the main is the owner’s to maintain, which is why the question of whether to clean or repair is yours to decide.
Cleaning or repair
If a camera shows roots at one or two joints and a sound pipe, regular cleaning is a reasonable plan. If it shows a broken section, an offset joint or a long belly, cleaning only buys time. Spot repair, lining or replacement are the options, and each is priced very differently. The sewer and basement backup page goes into those, along with the MMSD Pipe Check programme that helps with some lateral work.

What drain cleaning costs here
A single branch line clog is usually the cheapest call. A main line through a cleanout costs more, and more again if there is no accessible cleanout and the plumber has to pull a toilet to get in. Published local price lists we have seen run from about $250 for simple clearing to the high hundreds or more for a difficult main line, with a camera inspection often a few hundred dollars on top. Treat those as orientation, not a quote.
Common questions
Are chemical drain cleaners safe for old pipes?
They are hard on old cast iron and galvanised pipe, and they make the job dangerous for whoever opens the line next. A plunger or a hand auger on a single fixture is the better first try.
How often should a main line be cleaned?
Only as often as it needs. If roots come back every year, a camera inspection will tell you whether cleaning on a schedule or repairing the line is cheaper over five years.
Is the sewer lateral the city’s responsibility?
No. The lateral from the house to the main in the street belongs to the property owner to maintain, including the section under the sidewalk and boulevard.
Why does my floor drain smell?
Usually a dry trap. Pour a bucket of water into it every few weeks. If it still smells, or gurgles when other fixtures drain, have the line checked.
