Emergency Plumber in Milwaukee
Before you call anyone: if water is coming out of a pipe, close the main shutoff. In most Milwaukee houses it is next to the water meter, where the line comes through the basement wall.

The first ten minutes
- Close the main shutoff by the meter. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If it is a lever, turn it across the pipe.
- If water is near outlets, the furnace or the electrical panel, stay out of standing water and switch off the breaker for that area only if you can reach the panel while standing somewhere dry.
- Open a faucet on the lowest floor to drain what is left in the pipes.
- If the water heater is on a line that has burst, turn its gas control to “pilot” or switch off its breaker.
- Move what you can off the basement floor, and take photographs for insurance before anything is cleaned up.
Then call. Say it is an emergency in the first sentence, give the address, and say whether the water is off. That is what decides how the call gets handled.
If the main shutoff will not turn
This is common in old basements. A valve that has not moved in decades seizes, and forcing it can snap the stem. Do not hit it with a hammer. Milwaukee Water Works can shut water off at the curb stop outside, and that is the call to make if the house valve will not move. Once things are calm, have the house valve replaced so you never have to rely on the curb stop again.
What counts as an emergency
Water you cannot stop
A burst or split pipe, a failed water heater tank, a supply line under a sink or toilet that has let go. Shut the water and call.
Sewage coming up
Water or sewage rising through a floor drain, a basement toilet or the laundry tub. Stop running water in the house, including the washer and dishwasher, because every gallon you send down comes back up in the basement.
No water at all in winter
Usually a frozen line, often at the meter or where the service comes through the foundation. A frozen meter can crack and leak when it thaws. Call Milwaukee Water Works’ meter services if you suspect the meter itself; call a plumber for frozen pipes inside the house.
Gas smell near the water heater
Leave the house and call We Energies or 911 from outside. A plumber is not the first call for a gas leak.
Why January is the busy month
Search demand for an emergency plumber in Milwaukee peaked at about 1,300 a month in January and fell to about 210 in May and June. The pattern is the cold. A run of days below zero freezes lines on outside walls, in crawlspaces and in unheated porches, and the damage often shows up when the weather breaks and the ice in the pipe melts. A smaller rise in late summer tracks the storm season and basement backups.
What an emergency visit usually costs, and why
After-hours and weekend calls usually cost more than a weekday appointment, and many local companies charge a higher trip fee at night. The repair itself is priced like any other repair. What drives an emergency bill up is mostly access: a pipe inside a finished ceiling, a line under a slab, or a frozen section that has to be thawed before it can be repaired. Ask for the call-out fee before anyone is dispatched, and ask whether it is credited against the work.
Response times
We do not promise one, because we do not control it. The plumbing company you are put through to sets its own hours and dispatch, and on the coldest night of the year every company in the city is busy. What reliably shortens the wait is a clear first call: what happened, whether the water is off, and whether anyone is at the house.

Common questions
Where is the main water shutoff in a Milwaukee house?
Almost always in the basement, on the wall facing the street, next to the water meter. There is often a valve on each side of the meter; the one on the house side is the one to use.
Should I call Milwaukee Water Works or a plumber?
Water Works for anything at the curb stop, a frozen or leaking meter, or if your house valve will not close. A plumber for pipes, fixtures, drains and water heaters inside the house.
Does home insurance cover a burst pipe?
Many policies cover sudden water damage from a burst pipe, and many exclude sewer backup unless you bought a rider. Check your policy, photograph everything, and keep the plumber’s invoice describing the cause.
Is it safe to use the water heater after a burst pipe?
Not until the water is back on and the tank is full. Firing a tank that has drained can damage it. Turn it to pilot or off until the plumber says otherwise.
Can I just put a clamp on it?
A repair clamp can hold a pinhole for a night. It is not a repair, and on a corroded galvanised pipe the next leak is often a few inches away.
