Plumber in Milwaukee, WI
A plumber in Milwaukee spends a lot of the week inside houses built before 1950. The work follows from that: old supply pipe, cast iron and clay drains, lead service lines, and winters that find every weak joint.

What a Milwaukee plumbing call usually turns out to be
Leaks at old joints
A drip under a sink or a wet spot on the basement ceiling is the most common call there is. In an older Milwaukee house it is often not the fixture that failed but the pipe behind it. Galvanised steel corrodes from the inside, threads thin out, and a joint that held for seventy years gives way when someone tightens a faucet. A good plumber will tell you whether the leak is a one-off or the first of several on the same run.
Low pressure that creeps up on you
Pressure that has dropped slowly over years, especially on the upper floor of a duplex, usually means galvanised pipe closing up with scale and rust. The city supply is moderately hard, around eight grains per gallon by Milwaukee Water Works’ own figure, which is not enough on its own to choke a copper line. Old steel is a different story. Ask whether the fix is a section of pipe or a repipe of the whole run, and get the answer in writing.
Fixtures, toilets and valves
Running toilets, worn shutoff valves that will not close, kitchen faucets and garbage disposals. These are short jobs, and they are also the visits where a plumber sees the rest of your basement. If the main shutoff by the meter is seized, have it looked at during the same visit. It is the one valve you need to work on the worst day of the year.
Lead pipe: the question to settle before anything else
Milwaukee still has tens of thousands of lead service lines, and the city’s plan is to replace about 65,000 of them by 2037. If your home was built before the 1950s, the pipe that brings water from the street to your meter may be lead. Whether it is changes what you should do next and who should do it. For a required replacement at a home with one to four units and no commercial use, the city has charged the owner nothing since January 2024. Replacement is required in several situations, including when a leak or failure is found on either side of the line and when the city replaces its own section during a planned project. A plumber working privately should not be quoting you to replace a lead service line without first asking whether the city programme applies. Ask that question yourself if they do not. Where a local plumbing company earns its keep is everything around that work: confirming what the pipe is, replacing lead or galvanised pipe inside the house after the meter, repairing a leak on a non-lead private line, and setting up the plumbing so the new service connects cleanly. The guide to lead service lines goes through the city programme in detail.
Want someone to look at the pipe by your meter? Call and describe it, or send a photo after the call.
Who owns which pipe
Milwaukee Water Works treats the section from the curb stop to your water meter as the owner’s. If that section leaks and it is not lead, hiring a licensed plumber to repair it is your responsibility. If it is lead, a leak usually turns into a required full replacement under city ordinance, and the city generally does not allow the lead section to be patched. Everything after the meter, through the house, is yours in all cases. The sewer works the same way in reverse. The lateral from your house to the sewer main in the street is the property owner’s to maintain, roots, cracks and all. That surprises a lot of first-time buyers, and it is the reason a camera inspection is worth paying for before you buy an older house.
Licensing in Wisconsin, and how to check it
Plumbers in Wisconsin are licensed by the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS). The credential types include journeyman plumber, master plumber and restricted master plumber licences for service or appliance work. In the City of Milwaukee, the person who pulls a plumbing permit has to hold a master plumber credential of one of those kinds. Checking takes about two minutes. DSPS runs a public credential lookup at license.wi.gov, where you can search by name or licence number and see the credential type and expiry date. Ask the plumbing company for the name of the master plumber responsible for the permit, look them up, and keep a note. A company that hesitates over this is telling you something.
Permits: when the city wants to know
The City of Milwaukee says all plumbing work in the city needs a permit from the Permit and Development Center, with one exception: the owner-occupant of a one-family building. That exception does not cover a duplex, which is a large share of the city’s housing, so work in a two-family house goes through a licensed plumber who pulls the permit. Water heater replacements are counted as fixtures in the city’s plan review guidance. Ask the plumber whether the job needs a permit and who is pulling it. If the answer is that permits are optional, keep looking.
The housing stock, neighbourhood by neighbourhood
Bay View’s cottages and duplexes date largely from the rolling-mill era, with early cast iron and clay drains. Riverwest is full of Polish flats, cottages raised to fit a second unit underneath, which often means plumbing added to a basement long after the house was built. Sherman Park and Washington Heights have bigger period houses with long supply runs. Each of those shapes the work, and a company that knows the city will ask what kind of house it is before it asks what is wrong.
What to have ready when you call
- Your address, or at least the neighbourhood and ZIP.
- Whether it is a single-family house, a duplex or a Polish flat.
- What you are seeing and where: ceiling, wall, floor drain, fixture.
- Whether the main shutoff works, and whether you have already closed it.
- Rough age of the water heater if it might be involved (the label usually has a date).
None of that is required. It just makes the first call shorter, and it lets the company send someone with the right parts the first time.
Choosing between quotes
On anything larger than a fixture repair, two quotes are reasonable. Compare what is in them rather than the totals. A repipe quote should say which runs are being replaced, what material is going in, whether walls are being opened and who patches them, and whether the permit is included. A drain quote should say whether a camera inspection is part of it. A lower number that leaves those out is quoting a smaller job, and you find out which parts were missing on the day.
| Pipe | How it looks | Scratch and magnet test | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lead | Dull grey, often with a rounded bulge where it joins the meter | A key scratch shows shiny silver; a magnet will not stick | Pre-1950s service line. Check the city programme before paying anyone |
| Galvanised steel | Grey, threaded joints, sometimes rust at fittings | Scratch stays dull grey; a magnet sticks firmly | Corrodes inside; low pressure and pinhole leaks with age |
| Copper | Brown or penny coloured, sometimes green at joints | Scratch shows bright copper; a magnet will not stick | Usually a newer or already-replaced line |
| Plastic | White, black or blue | Not metal; no scratch test needed | A recent replacement. Check the pipe after the meter as well |

Common questions
How much does a plumber cost in Milwaukee?
Most local companies charge a trip or diagnostic fee and then quote the job. Simple fixture repairs often land in the low hundreds. Clearing a main line, replacing a water heater or repiping are priced as projects. The cost guide on this site goes through the ranges and what moves them. We do not set prices; the company that quotes you does.
Do Milwaukee plumbers need a licence?
Yes. Wisconsin licenses plumbers through the Department of Safety and Professional Services, and in the City of Milwaukee the person pulling the permit must hold a master plumber credential. You can look up any plumber by name on the DSPS credential lookup at license.wi.gov.
Can I do my own plumbing in Milwaukee?
Only in limited cases. The city’s exception is for the owner-occupant of a one-family building, and permits still apply. In a duplex, a rental or anything larger, the work goes through a licensed plumber. Check with the city before starting, because rules can change.
My water pressure is terrible upstairs. What is it?
In an older Milwaukee house it is usually galvanised supply pipe narrowed by scale, sometimes a failing pressure-reducing or main valve. A plumber can test pressure at the meter and at the top fixture and tell you which.
Should I replace my galvanised pipes?
If they are leaking at joints or pressure has dropped, replacement usually beats repeated repairs. Galvanised pipe downstream of a lead service line can also hold lead, which is another reason to ask about it when the service line is replaced.
Who pays if the water line leaks between the curb and my house?
Milwaukee Water Works treats the curb stop to the meter as the owner’s section. If it is not lead, the repair is yours and needs a licensed plumber. If it is lead, a leak usually triggers a required replacement through the city programme, so call Milwaukee Water Works before hiring anyone.
Is there a warranty on the work?
That is between you and the plumbing company, and terms vary. Ask what is covered on parts and on labour, for how long, and get it in writing before work starts. We do not perform the work and cannot warrant it.
Do you work on the North Side and the South Side?
Yes, the whole city: Bay View, Riverwest, Sherman Park, Washington Heights, Walker’s Point, the East Side, Layton Park and the rest, plus Wauwatosa and West Allis. Give the ZIP when you call.
